“Kompilation - Compilation”
Ausstellung / Exhibition
We got asked to organize an exhibition for the 2019 electronic music festival “Ernte”. We wanted to include the venue and vibe of the village in our work so we came up with the idea of “Kompilation”.
In the photo and film exhibition "Kompilation" by Fabian Rettenbacher and Philipp Rirsch, the artists deal intensively with the concept of "found footage". How does a story change when it is told more often? What is added, what is omitted? The classic „chinese whispers", newly interpreted and processed.
The exhibition consists of three parts.
Fabricated and found photographs by Fabian Rettenbacher as well as film works based on the same approach by Philipp Rirsch will be shown.
The venue itself, should be seen as a kind of organism that itself functions as part of the storytelling. Light falls through windows, cracks and openings into the building, meets with artificially generated projection light and is "processed" and stored in it. After dusk, this play of light is set free and released back into the outside world. A metamorphic narrative play of past and future.
The first part of the exhibition shows a personal insight into the world of "holiday photography". A world in which it is less a matter of faithfully reproducing what you have experienced. Moments are stored the way they should be seen and told again. An ideal emerges. After a time, this created ideal is more real than the moment itself.
The photographs shown, are a mixture of collections and self-produced, distributed over three generations.
"The installation shows images of three generations of a family and the time they spent away from their everyday lives. The selection of images summarizes moments of various travels from 1960-2018 and attempts to connect them through an aesthetic language. Through the combination of slides, silver gelatine and digital prints, the constantly changing technical aspect should also be taken into account".
The second and third part of the exhibition deal with the medium of film and how a story is told in a moving image. The films shown are analog projections on Super 8 and 16mm, as well as digital at night. The images are projected onto a translucent white fabric, where they meet daylight and unite into a common light source. The 16mm projection "untitled" by Philipp Rirsch is shown.
The story is about a young girl and her way into adulthood, the opportunities that present themselves, the abysses that slowly open up. A dark journey through customs and the past.
In double projection an 8mm loop runs parallel. There is not much to see.
At night everything changes.
Projection on the 350m away mountain.
